Maurizio "Rece" D'Alessandro

LEAD TRAINER + FOUNDER:
Maurizio D’Alessandro has spent nearly his entire life around player development. The son of Ben D’Alessandro, founder of the Virginia Basketball Academy (VABA), Maurizio began coaching as an eighth grader, leading his first 3rd–4th grade recreational team. Over the past 10 years, he has worked as a youth basketball trainer and VABA summer camp coach, coached multiple AAU teams within the organisation, and served as Lead Summer Director for all VABA Summer Camps from 2023–2026.

As a player, Maurizio competed at the NCAA Division I level for Rider University and currently plays for Ave Maria University, one of the nation’s top NAIA basketball programmes. He is also the founder of Hoops Project, combining his experience as a player, coach, and trainer to help athletes develop their game through purposeful, high-level instruction.

Hear From Athletes...

What sets Rece apart, though, is how he pushes. He asks for real effort every session and doesn't let a kid coast — but he does it in a way that keeps the game fun. My son leaves workouts tired and wanting to come back. He has never dreaded a session.

Rece also connects with kids personally. He knows what motivates my son specifically, he notices when something is off, and he's been a genuinely positive presence in his life beyond the court. That kind of trust is not something you can teach. Rece invests in his students on and off the court and that type of dedication is extremely hard to find.

Any family looking for a trainer who will develop real skills while keeping a young player in love with the game should look no further
KACIE SNELLINGS (Mother of henry, athlete since 2023)
There is a deep trust between Coach Rece and his boys. In addition to coaching my son’s AAU team, Coach Rece also trains my son off season and in season. My son is always excited to take his lessons going on 3 years now. I have seen my son grow into a strong fundamental player with a high court IQ; more importantly he has evolved into a leader on and off the court emulating Coach Rece’s characteristics of discipline, strong work ethic, and long term growth.

His practice plans and private training are detailed, organized and clearly communicated, focusing on strong player development and fundamentals. As we just finished our 3rd AAU season , with predominantly the same group of boys over 3 years, here are a few things that stand out with Rece. I have heard on numerous occasions, from AAU refs, that it’s great to watch the actual game of basketball being played on the court by our team. The fundamentals are clearly evident. I call him the Piped Piper, as the boys look up to him and strive to follow his strong work ethic, discipline, infectious nature, and ‘locked in’ playing style.

Martha peck (mother of cullen, athlete since 2023)

Rece has trained both of my sons, two different ages and personalities with different basketball strengths and weaknesses.  Rece’s individual attention and assessment of each boy quickly gave them each exactly what they needed to take their skills to the next level.

The progress was quick and impressive within just a few sessions.  Even more important, both boys love working with Rece, looking up to him as a great role model.  He helped them each with confidence that has instilled an internal motivation to keep them working between sessions and out of season.
